Childhood Memories

Jean Jacket, Blue Suburban, Twined Tannenbaum.

Christmas Tree - Doug Fir Portland
This picture nearly made me tear up when I recently rediscovered it…I unearthed this 4×6 inch Fujicolor print in me ol’ childhood memory box. It is, by far, one of my new favorite pictures of all time. It is so telling of my youth and where I came from. I remember those cold early December days heading out to the “You Cut!” Christmas Tree Lot with my dad, siblings and a hacksaw. We’d all pile in our big (and I mean big) baby blue Suburban, pick out the perfect tree, feverishly cut it down, strap it to the roof and then barrel home to set ‘er up in living room.

Childhood Memories

Scribbled black marker hair.

Woman Face Drawing
Me recently found this ol’ marker drawing without a date stamped on it- I don’t know if I was 5 or 15 when I drew it. Regardless, I love the emotion this unisex character emits so simply: wild hair, darting eyes and a triangular mouth that could bite through steel.

Cartoon Drawings
Me pulled this wacky cartoon drawing out of my Childhood Memory box- I bet this picture is at least 20 years old. I am debating whether or not I should have my attorney’s contact the estate of the late Notorious B.I.G… Biggie Smalls sounds awful close to Big.M.small if you ask me.

Childhood Memories

Black dot, inside yellow dot, inside black circle.

eagle eye
Me drew this eagle head in 1989- please pardon the coloring outside the lines on my sharp orange beak.

My favorite part of this drawing is the copyright symbol in the lower right corner (comedy)- at ten years old, I didn’t have much of an eagle legal team to back me if someone infringed.

Childhood Memories

Stone faced draw-ring.

stone face
Me was doing a bit of house cleaning this weekend and I found this sketch (from 2000) in a dusty box under my stairs.

I want this guy to be on my team.

Childhood Memories

Dimly lit situations.

Owl at Night

old owl drawing (from 1989) pictured above: white colored pencil atop black construction paper and matted with a cheap crusty white frame.

Speaking of dark/light situations…the lights went out in the db clay bathroom this weekend. We had to replace these burnt out 4 foot light sticks (pictured here). I broke the old lights with a two by 4 piece of wood…

Childhood Memories

Managing (color) by exception.

Dark red lips & hair, yellow skin & teeth, dark purplish black eyes, green jackets, blue turtlenecks, etc…1984 childhood self portrait I’ve drawn below. If you break the word “Managing” down it reads Man Aging.

Childhood Memories

933 in 1989.

Drawing I did in 1989 using my Dad’s fancy ol’ architecture marker set.  This is not how my room looked…I am trying to remember whose room it was…regardless it is 9:33.

Childhood Memories

Childhood desk protection program.

Cheap Desks
Me found this ol’ morbid childhood marker drawing in a box down in my parents basement: on a recent visit you know. I don’t remember how old I was when I drew this. And I don’t remember if this was done as a joke or if it was due to a childhood anger management problem thing I had (I hope it was a joke); I think and I imagine it was drawn sometime during elementary school. In hindsight I think: what an odd and somewhat funny drawing…I wish I remembered more about why I drew it…but it has slipped my mind.
Growing older in age these days, the last thing I want anything of is violence and stuffs. You can touch my desk all you want man, I am too frail to fight back…

Childhood Memories

Carpet pad palm trees.

Carpet Scraps
My family moved out of Wyoming when I was in Second Grade. It was a cold December day (I think) when we all loaded up in our big blue suburban and our old “white car” and drove the fourteen hours to our new home in West Linn, Oregon.

Upon move in, it was determined that Me and my (2) Brother’s would share a room in the basement. The room residents prior to us had a cat. A cat who pissed on the shag carpet that laid in our new bedroom. My Dad, being the good man that he is, pulled out the cat-piss-covered shag carpet in our room and replaced it with a flat blue tweed like carpet…it much improved our new living situation- Thanks pops.

I made the childhood art piece above by taking the carpet pad scraps (that my Dad pulled out of the room mentioned above) and I cut them with exacto blades and glued them down onto a cardboard backing to form these palm trees. I painted the trees themselves with red paint.
